A list of Frequently Asked Questions about Select Dermaplaning at the SkinLaze Laser Skin Spa Center in Fayetteville NY. Serving the Syracuse NY and Central New York (CNY) Area
All Select Dermaplaning treatments are administered by our licensed estheticians under the direction of our Medical Director, Dr. Douglas W. Halliday.
What is Select Dermaplaning?
Select Dermaplaning is performed by our trained SkinLaze aestheticians. This Dermaplaning treatment is a simple and safe procedure for selectively removing the outer most layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant and stimulating a production of new collagen and refreshed skin cells. In addition to exfoliating the skin, it removes the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Some confuse dermaplaning with dermabrasion, a medical procedure performed by a doctor in which the skin is abraded down to the dermis.
How is dermaplaning performed?
SkinLaze aestheticians use a surgical blade and a delicate touch to effectively abrade the surface of the skin using light feathering strokes.
Who is a candidate for dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is beneficial for patients with rough, dry skin; superficial hyper pigmentation; mild acne scarring and those with fine lines and wrinkles. Removing the epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers.
If the fine hair on the face is removed, will it grow back thicker?
Vellus hair generally grows back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment.
Is the treatment safe?
This treatment is extremely safe when performed by an adequately trained aesthetician. There is no more risk to the skin than when a man shaves his face. There is also no downtime associated with this procedure.
Can Select Dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?
Absolutely. We use a gentle peel without harsh ingredients that are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. In conjunction, they contribute to a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. This combination promotes healthy new skin cell growth while combating the signs of sun damage, aging, and environmental damage.
What skin types/conditions should not be treated?
We do not recommend this treatment for those suffering from active acne and an overproduction of the sebaceous gland. The oils from the sebaceous gland need to travel up and connect with the vellus hair. If the hair is removed, then the oils tend to stay below where they are prone to mix with bacterial colonies, ultimately stimulating more acne.
Select Dermaplaning vs. other treatment alternatives?
For most situations, the primary alternative to dermaplaning is microdermabrasion. Like dermaplaning, microdermabrasion has long been one of the top non-surgical treatments for facial skin rejuvenation. And while they both aim to achieve similar goals, the treatment mechanism and the effects can be slightly different. Instead of using a surgical blade, our medical grade microdermabrasion exfoliates the surface skin with pressurized abrasive diamonds and suction. Due to that suction, microdermabrasion is not recommended for people who have Rosacea or prone to broken capillaries.
