Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal in Syracuse NY, CNY

There are many questions when comparing different hair removal methods, such as laser hair removal and electrolysis. What does the treatment entail? How many treatments will I need? Am I a good candidate? Who performs the treatments?

Laser Hair Removal in Syracuse, NY:

ExpressLaze laser hair removal, administered by SkinLaze’s licensed medical aestheticians, uses the laser’s energy to noninvasively target the hair follicle below the epidermis. The laser’s energy is then transmitted to thermal energy; once the laser reaches the follicle, it then alters the blood flow to that specific follicle and hindering the growing process.

Each laser hair removal treatment is customized for every patient’s skin type, hair color, and hair type, using different wavelengths and settings to ensure optimal results. Prior to treatment, it is not necessary to have hair growth, since the laser targets the follicle underneath the skin’s surface. Typically, laser hair removal does not favor those with grey, blonde, red, or white hair, because the pigment is not dark enough for the laser to target.

Generally speaking, it takes about 6-8 laser hair removal treatments to see significant hair reduction in the treated areas.

SkinLaze’s unique ExpressLaze laser hair removal system, formulated by our medical director Dr. Douglas W. Halliday, utilizes state-of-the-art, FDA-approved lasers to provide maximum results for every client.

Electrolysis:

In contrast to laser hair removal, electrolysis requires the use of a tiny needle, which is inserted by an electrolysis technician. Electrolysis can be performed on any hair color and type (including blonde, red, grey, or white), since the metal probe targets the follicle of the hair, as opposed to laser hair removal, which targets the pigment in the hair.

According to American Electrology Association, once the needle in inserted into the single hair follicle beneath the skin, “a low-level electrical energy pulse is sent into the follicle to destroy it . . . the existing hair falls out, and the process is repeated hair by hair.”* The hair is destroyed one follicle at a time, causing the hair to fall out.

It may take up to 15 – 30 sessions to complete the electrolysis process and each treatment can be time consuming.
